The Waterford Learning Centre is a vibrant, flexible resource-rich space.  All our students, from Years 5 to 12, are welcome to use this space throughout the school day, both individually and as part of class or study groups.

Our highly qualified teacher librarians work with primary and secondary staff in order to foster information literacy skills across the curriculum and develop students as critical readers of print and digital formats.  These multi-literacies are integral to meeting the challenges of a rapidly changing, globally connected, information-based world.

We strive to develop the key 21st Century skills of critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration, providing opportunities for students to immerse themselves in a wide range of experiences outside the curriculum in order to gain these competencies.

Engaging students in our literary culture and sharing our enthusiasm for reading is core to our mission.  All boys participate in the well regarded Accelerated Reader Program, which motivates reading practice through differentiated goals, and provides assessment through quizzes.  Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to enjoy presentations by visiting authors, workshops (including cybersafety and science experiments), and Book Week celebrations and activities.

All students in Years 5 and 6 come to the Waterford Learning Centre for one hour each week.  Lessons are structured to extend classroom studies, with an emphasis on developing skills in information literacy.  The boys also trade opinions on the books they are reading, and learn to create book trailers using iMovie to share with their peers.

The Waterford Learning Centre continues the development of students as readers and as information literate, digital citizens throughout their secondary school years.

We provide a wide selection of quality literature and high interest non-fiction in both print and digital formats, including a large collection of manga and other graphic novels. Students from Years 7 to 10 have the opportunity to participate in the Edmund Rice Wide Reading Challenge (ERWRC), with a dedicated reading list of diverse literature for each year group.  There is also a Book Club for Years 9 -12, which meets every term to discuss novels, and which hosts combined meetings with Domremy College Five Dock twice a year.

The teacher librarians continue to foster professional relationships with teachers across all key learning areas in order to promote meaningful tasks that develop students as collaborators, creators, problem-solvers and critical thinkers.

Our library staff prepare Year 10 students for the academic rigours of senior study by facilitating the HSC: All My Own Work program.  This program ensures all boys are aware of the principles and practices of good scholarship. This includes understanding and valuing ethical practices when locating and using information as part of their HSC studies.
