The Night of Notables: A pedagogy for boys

Effective teaching for boys thrives on movement, clear structure, hands‑on learning, and strong relationships. This term, Year 5 students experienced all of these elements through their annual Night of Notables project – a showcase that brought history, creativity, and performance together in a meaningful and memorable way.

The project began with each student selecting a notable Australian who has made a positive and lasting contribution to society. Over several weeks, the boys researched their chosen figure, exploring their achievements, personal story, and impact on Australia. This research formed the foundation for a series of creative tasks designed to deepen understanding and build engagement.

Students produced an artistic portrait, crafted an infographic poster, wrote interview questions, and prepared a biography. They also curated props and designed a display that reflected the life and legacy of their notable Australian. With the support of their families, each boy assembled a costume and rehearsed embodying their chosen figure.

The culmination of this work was the exhibition evening, where students stepped fully into character. As parents, staff, and peers moved through the displays, the boys responded to questions in role, demonstrating not only their knowledge but also their confidence and ownership of the learning process. This authentic performance element provided the “why” behind the task — a crucial motivator for boys, who learn best when they see relevance and purpose.

The project also reflects key principles of effective pedagogy for boys: incorporating movement, using visual cues, setting clear short‑term goals, and harnessing positive competition to drive engagement. Most importantly, the success of this year’s presentations highlights the strong relationships between Year 5 teachers and their students. When boys feel supported and understood, the quality of their work rises accordingly.

The Night of Notables is more than a research project – it is a celebration of Australia’s influential figures and a powerful example of how boys learn best: by doing, creating, and connecting. Through this experience, students not only honoured significant Australians but also developed skills and confidence that will continue to shape their learning journey.
